Description of Illustration: a very rare black and white illustration of shoe lace advertisement for Paton's Laces
Victorian newspapers/magazines/books were not known for accurate, unaffected treatment of black people in their publications. The few realistic depictions of people of color that I come across are usually found among the personal illustrations/paintings of artists and privately owned companies that refused to conform to this obvious social norm during that era.
